Nierika Workshop: Wixárika Thread Painting

Come discover nierika, or thread painting, a sacred artistic technique of the Wixárika people. Using Campeche wax and colored wool threads, you’ll learn the basics of this traditional practice to create your own composition, following the spiral’s movement from the centre outward. This two-hour workshop, led by Tekpatl Tsonketomatl, offers an immersive experience that fosters concentration, creativity, and a connection with the act of creating. In a calm and contemplative atmosphere, participants are invited to take their time, work in silence, and let their hands tell their own story.
Schedule:
– 3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.: Opening circle and introduction to the Wixárika worldview.
– 4:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.: Demonstration of the technique: Campeche wax, thread, the spiral, and the starting point of the composition.
– 4:15 PM to 5:20 PM: Guided meditation.
– 5:20 PM to 5:30 PM: Sharing circle and closing ritual.
All materials are included: wood, Campeche wax, wool yarn (5 colors), and tools. You’ll leave with your own 20 × 20 cm nierika, fully completed and ready to display.
Spaces are limited to 10 people in order to ensure a meaningful experience. No artistic experience required, just a desire to create with your hands and heart. An apron is optional.
