Online Symposium: Polarization and Violence among CEGEP Students - How Can We Better Prevent It?
The rise of social, political, and cultural polarization is increasingly affecting young people, particularly in college settings. Social media, media discourse, and the circulation of conspiracy theories amplify these tensions, which result in radicalized positions, difficulty in dialogue, and sometimes violent behavior. These phenomena are not merely a matter of individual differences of opinion, but reveal deeper social divisions linked to inequality, exclusion, and a quest for recognition. In this context, CEGEPs are on the front lines in addressing these issues and maintaining inclusive and safe educational environments. The objectives of this virtual conference on polarization among CEGEP students are to take stock of the situation, analyze its impact on young people and school environments, and propose appropriate prevention strategies. Through presentations and round tables, researchers, experts, and practitioners will discuss the concrete manifestations of polarization and the much-needed development of intervention strategies.
The event is an opportunity for collective reflection and co-construction in order to strengthen young people's resilience, equip stakeholders, and promote safer, more inclusive CEGEPs that are better equipped for the future. This free symposium will take place via Teams.
