Morocco: A History of Coexistence, as Applied through the Passerelles Program
In a period marked by domestic and international tensions over matters of identity, Jewish-Muslim dialogue has emerged as an important catalyst for social cohesion. In this regard, Morocco stands as a unique historical example of peaceful and enduring coexistence between the Jewish and Muslim communities, shaped by centuries of shared life, mutual respect, and cross-cultural influences. In the medinas and mellahs, Moroccan Jews and Muslims have contributed to the emergence of a rich and vibrant shared heritage: intertwined social practices, shared traditions, respective celebrations, common artistic expressions, and converging symbolic references. This collective memory, still very much alive today, offers an inspiring model for reflecting on contemporary forms of coexistence, particularly in pluralistic societies such as Montreal. Through its mission to bring the Jewish and Muslim communities closer together, Mémoires & Dialogue, a Montreal-based nonprofit organization, positions itself as the best vehicle for highlighting this unique Moroccan experience, not from a nostalgic perspective, but as a living source of lessons capable of inspiring contemporary practices of intercultural dialogue.
Our goal is to draw on the Moroccan model of Jewish-Muslim coexistence as a living example that offers hope, and to derive lessons from it that are applicable to life in Montreal.
