Sugarcane: Virtual Screening and Discussion

As part of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and of Peace Days, we have chosen to screen the documentary SUGARCANE, the first feature-length documentary by Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie. Sugarcane is a striking tribute to the resilience of Indigenous peoples and their ways of life. This sweeping cinematic portrait captures a community at a moment of global reckoning. Set against the backdrop of a groundbreaking investigation into abuse and deaths at an Indigenous residential school, the film gives voice to those involved, enabling them to break cycles of intergenerational trauma by bearing witness to painful and long-overlooked truths and the love that persists within families, despite the revelation of genocide.
Join us for this virtual discussion with the filmmakers of SUGARCANE in conversation with Deborah Corber, founder of Corber Consulting, a firm dedicated to promoting reconciliation between Indigenous peoples and non-Indigenous Canadians. The screening and discussion will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

The documentary will be available for on-demand viewing to those registered for the event between September 29 and October 6.
