The Medicine Wheel teachings, also known as the teachings of the four directions with Gail Chamberlain
The concept of the four directions is a guideline of understanding that many Indigenous nations possess in one way or another in their cultural heritage and knowledge. For the Haudenosaunee people, this concept represents the four cardinal points, the four winds, the four seasons, the four stages of life and the ceremonial calendar that follows the seasons, moons and times of year. The cardinal points also represent the four states of being: emotional, spiritual, physical and mental. The elders have taught many others that the emotional state is yellow and lies to the east, the spiritual state is red and lies to the south, the physical state is black and lies to the west, and the mental state is white and lies to the north. This teaching is always followed by a talking circle to let the other members of the circle express how they identify with this lesson. Talking circles are intended to bring people together in an egalitarian space as humans and spiritual beings. The Medicine Wheel is an inclusive teaching that leaves room for self-confidence and pride in where we come from, as it focuses on the four directions, as well as the four colours that represent the union of the black, yellow, white and red nations.
