Participatory artwork on the theme of the Great Peace of Montreal of 1701 with Sylvain Rivard

The Great Peace of Montreal was a peace treaty signed in Montreal in 1701 by Sieur de Callière, Governor of New France, and 39 Aboriginal nations, mainly from the Iroquois and Great Lakes regions. Negotiated over four years, this treaty put an end to the interminable wars of the 16th century between the Haudenosaunee, the French and their native allies. Part of Place d'Youville in Old Montreal was renamed Place de la Grande-Paix-de-Montréal for the tricentenary of the Great Peace of Montreal in 2001. To create this work, artist Sylvain Rivard alias Vainvard invites people to come and hammer a nail trimmed with wool and silk onto a photo.

On the program:
– Rework an image using wool, silk and nails.
– Create an evocative work on the theme of the Great Peace of Montreal of 1701, using the duality of rough and soft. Through materials, textures, tones and the gesture of nailing versus knotting. – Revisiting history in a suggestive way to achieve a commemorative creation.
